The DND Pit Fiend is a fearsome creature that should not be taken lightly. Pit fiends were the tyrants and overlords of the baatezu, leading Hell’s hierarchy. Pit fiends, after being cleansed in the Pit of Flame, became beings of pure, inconceivable evil who surpass ordinary devils in wickedness.

Here are some more details about Pit Fiends.

Appearance

Pit fiends are huge devils that stand about 12 feet tall and weigh 4,000 pounds.

They have red skin, black hair, and glowing red eyes. They have enormous wings that allow them to fly, and they are armed with deadly claws.

Their eyes are glowing orbs of fire, and their mouths are full of sharp teeth.

Ecology

Pit fiends are born in the Nine Hells and live there for their entire lives.

They are created from the souls of wicked mortals who have been damned to Hell. The pit fiends are the most powerful of all the devils, and they rule over the other devils with an iron fist.

Society

The pit fiends are the tyrants and rulers of Hell’s hierarchy, leading it from the top.

They are incredibly intelligent and cruel beings, and they take great pleasure in tormenting mortals. The pit fiends are the most powerful devils.

They use their power to torment and torture mortals.

Pit Fiend Combat Actions and Tactics

Pit Fiends are powerful creatures that can easily take down opponents with their powerful attacks.

They usually start combat by flying up into the air and casting a spell (like a fireball or wall of fire) to stun their opponents. They will then swoop down and attack with their claws, teeth, tails, and mace.

Pit Fiends have a variety of abilities that they can use in combat.

They can use their wings to fly, their magic, and their claws and teeth to deal physical damage.

They are also immune to fire and have resistance to all other forms of damage.

The combat actions and tactics of a Pit Fiend can vary depending on the type of Pit Fiend. Erinyes tend to use their fire weapons to incinerate their opponents, while Ice Devils prefer to use their ice breath weapon to freeze them.

Ice Devils will sometimes also use their cold breath weapon to create walls of ice that block off escape routes or impede movement.

When planning an encounter with a Pit Fiend, it is important to take into account their powerful attacks and abilities.

Planning an encounter that is too difficult may result in the party being quickly overwhelmed, while an encounter that is too easy may be boring for the players.

It is just as important to consider its role in the game.

Will it be a powerful enemy that the party must defeat or a terrifying background threat that lends a sense of doom to the adventure?

There are many different ways to use a Pit Fiend in your game, so make sure to choose one that fits the needs of your story.

Personally, I wouldn’t throw a group of players at a Pit Fiend unless they were at least level 10.

Pit Fiend Abilities & Powers

Pit Fiends possess a variety of abilities and powers.

These abilities and powers can vary depending on the type of Pit Fiend. Some of the more common abilities and powers that a Pit Fiend may have are listed below.

1) Create and Manipulate Flames

Pit Fiends can create and manipulate fire.

They can use this ability to shoot fireballs, create walls of flame, or incinerate their opponents. This ability is usually only possessed by Erinyes.

2) Fly

Pit Fiends have massive bat-like wings that allow them to fly.

This gives them a great advantage in combat as they can attack from above and avoid most attacks.

3) Multi-attack

During a multi-attack, Pit Fiends use one action to make four attacks.

The multi-attack includes:

  • 1 bite attack
  • 1 claw attack one with its claw
  • 1 mace attack
  • 1 tail attack

They also have the option to use their melee weapon instead of making physical attacks.

4) Bite

The Pit Fiend makes a bite attack against an opponent.

This attack immediately deals 1d10+5 points of damage.

If you are bitten, you must make a Constitution saving throw against a DC of 21. If you fail, you become poisoned and take 6d6 poison damage at the start of each turn.

5) Resistance to Damage

Pit Fiends have resistance to all forms of non-magical and non-silvered damage.

This includes physical, magical, and elemental damage.

It is important to note that this resistance does not make them immune to damage, it just reduces the amount of damage they take.

6) Magic Resistance

Pit Fiends have resistance to all magic spells and effects.

This includes both harmful and helpful spells.

When player characters or other creatures cast spells against a pit fiend, the pit fiend gets an advantage on all saving throws.

7) Immunity to Fire

Pit Fiends are immune to fire.

This means that they can not be harmed by fire-based attacks or spells.

The only way to harm a Pit Fiend with fire is to use a magical weapon or spell that specifically says it can bypass their immunity.

8) Fear Aura

Pit Fiends radiate an aura of fear.

This aura affects all creatures within a 30-foot radius.

Affected creatures must roll a successful Wisdom check against a DC 21. If they fail, the creature is frightened for a full minute.

The creature repeats the save at the end of each of its turns. On a successful roll, the fear ends.

9) Telepathy

Pit Fiends can communicate telepathically with any creature that understands at least one language.

This ability has a range of 100 feet.

10) Magic Circles

Pit Fiends can create magical circles that block off escape routes or impede movement. These circles can constrain enemies within 90 feet of the fiend.

These “magic circles” are better known as the Hold Monster spell.

11) Mace

The Pit Fiend makes a mace attack against an opponent.

This attack deals 2d8+5 points of damage. It also has the chance to knock the opponent unconscious.

The opponent must make a successful Constitution saving throw against a DC 21. If they fail, they will be knocked unconscious for up to one minute.

DND Pit Fiend Immunities

Pit Fiends are immune to fire and poison.

This means that players can not harm Pit Fiends with fire or poison (unless the spell specifies that it overcomes immunities).

As you can see, DND Pit Fiends are extremely powerful creatures.

One of the best environments for Pit Fiends is one covered in fire. That will give their opponents a major disadvantage.

You could also throw a Pit Fiend into an area steeped in poisonous snakes or other creatures.

Here are a few ways that Pit Fiends are magical:

  • They can detect magic at will
  • They can cast fireballs at will

Are Fiends Evil?

There’s no denying that fiends are definitely evil.

They were born of evil, and they embody everything that’s dark and malicious in the world.

If we’re talking alignment, they are Lawful Evil.

Lawful Evil means that they will do whatever they want without concern for others. They do have a code but it doesn’t prevent them from savaging others for their benefit.

Is a Fiend a Devil 5e?

No, a Fiend is not a devil.

Devils are a specific type of fiend that dwells in the Nine Hells. There are many different types of fiends, and each one has its own unique powers and abilities.

Are DND Pit Fiends Immortal?

Yes, it is assumed that they are immortal.

Some fiends reproduced and had offspring that were smaller than them, but these offspring grew bigger and stronger over time.

However, no fiend has ever died of natural causes or just grown old.

What Language Do Fiends Speak?

Fiends speak Infernal, the language of the Nine Hells.

This language is a mix of Celestial, Draconic, and Abyssal. Many fiends also know Common and can speak it fluently.

How Many Pit Fiends are There?

There is no set number of pit fiends.

They are born from the souls of evil mortals, so their numbers can fluctuate depending on how many evil mortals there are in the world.

However, it is estimated that there are at least a few thousand Pit Fiends in existence.

While there is only one main type of Pit Fiend, here are some related fiends:

  • Erinyes—Erinyes is a fearsome type of fiend with red skin and black hair, and they stand about 12 feet tall. They have enormous wings that allow them to fly, and they have barbed tails that they use to whip their enemies. Erinyes are known for their cruelty and their love of causing pain. Their main purpose is to torture and torment mortals.
  • Horned Devils—They have a similar appearance to the Erinyes, except they have a pair of horns on their heads instead of just one. Horned Devils are larger and more powerful than Erinyes, and as such are usually found in higher-ranking positions within Pit Fiend society.
  • Ice Devils—They have blue skin and white hair and are the weakest of the three. They dwell in the coldest reaches of the Nine Hells, and their bodies are adapted to survive in extreme temperatures. Ice Devils are sadistic and cruel and take pleasure in inflicting pain on others. They have a variety of abilities that allow them to control the battlefield. They can create walls of ice, shoot bolts of cold energy, and breathe a cone of cold that can freeze their opponents.

What are a Pit Fiend’s Weaknesses?

Pit fiends are vulnerable to holy water and the spells holy smite and banishment.

They are also susceptible to mind-affecting spells and effects, such as Charm Mind Spike, and Hold Monster.

To defeat a fiend:

  • Avoid fire and poison attacks
  • Focus on magic attacks
  • Focus on attacks with magical weapons
  • Use silvered weapons and holy water

Can a DND Pit Fiend Use Weapons?

Yes, a DND Pit Fiend can use weapons.

However, they prefer to use their claws, teeth, and tail in melee combat. They will only use weapons if they are absolutely necessary.

Can You Summon a Pit Fiend?

Powerful magical characters can summon a Pit Fiend.

They can also be summoned by powerful demons and devils. I don’t recommend summoning a PIt Fiend unless you are prepared to make or deal or die.

It is because of this that Pit Fiends are some of the most feared creatures in all of existence.

Can You Shapechange into a Pit Fiend?

Yes, if you are a powerful magic user, you can shapechange into a DND Pit Fiend.

This is an extremely difficult feat to accomplish, and it requires a great deal of power. It is not recommended that anyone attempt this unless they are absolutely sure of their abilities.

When you shapechange, you don’t automatically get the “mace” mentioned in the stat block.

Of course, your Dungeon Master (DM) can rule that you get one, if they wish.

What Is Lucille the Pit Fiend?

Lucille is a Pit Fiend miniature that is also featured in fan art.

She is one of the most powerful creatures in all of existence, and she is feared by even the mightiest of devils.

Lucille is said to be nearly impossible to kill, and her power is said to be nearly limitless.
